Managing Your Diabetes 

On 11th May Understanding Diabetes Event was held in Pollokshields Community Centre.  The event was presented in Collaboration with South Asian Health Foundation.  The event was opened by Ambreen Azam Community Pharmacist.

Dr David McGrane who is Diabetes Consultant in Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.  He discussed how South Asian Communities are more prone to Diabetes.  He also spoke on the importance of Exercise.  He added that before he came to this event he jogged for 30 minutes and he stressed all of us must exercise.

Dr Kashif Ali who is General Practitioner in one of the Health Centres in Glasgow shared his experience as a General Practitioner and gave advice how to cook healthy food at a reasonable cost.

We were also joined by Allama Shabir Rabbani Sahib who is an Imam at a local Mosque who spoke about Diabetes, Ramadhan and Islamic Perspective.

There was Question and Answer opportunity for delegates. The delegates asked if there is a possibility of arranging Healthy Cookery Classes for the community.  TThe event was concluded with refreshments

Public Meeting in Shields

Public Meeting was called by Pollokshields Community Council, the purpose of this meeting was to look at various issues faced by Pollokshields residents.  The meeting was chaired by Tahir Mohammed Community Councillor who is also leading Environmental Project within Pollokshields which includes double parking, parking at the corners, Vermin, Flytipping, Potholes, blocked Gullies, missed bin uplifts and many more.

To give an update and answer questions from public, Community safety Glasgow, Public Health and Land and Environmental Services were invited.  But unfortunately on the day received apologies from Community Safety Glasgow and Public Health Officers that they are unable to attend.  Please find the reports at the end of this post.

Bill Fraser, Pollokshields Community Council Chair welcomed everyone to the meeting and gave an update on make your mark project.

Mike Stranger delivered presentation on the history of Clydesdale Cricket Club and gave an updated on the new activities and events taking place at Clydesdale Cricket Club.

Tahir Mohammed delivered detailed presentations on issues faced by Pollokshields residents and the work he is carrying out with a group of volunteers.

Charles Molony gave an update on the work his department has done over the pass 6 months within Pollokshields East and he also gave an insight in the delay of uplifting the domestic waste  during the Christmas and new holidays.  Tahir Mohammed the project lead commended Mr Molony for his tremendous support throughout the year.  On behalf of residents of Pollokshields he thanks Mr Molony and his team.

Lindsey Hendry (CC) gave an update on Pollokshields Cycling Forum. She informed the meeting that they kicked off a cycling initiative with local organisations and folk who have a keen interest in cycling.

This is becoming joke that many private taxi drivers are parking at the corner of the streets and there is a danger of serious accident.

Taxi drivers need to consider what could be the consequences of this kind of parking.

Should these people get their licence taken away?
