Safe Winter Driving

safedriving2017

As predicted, this week we have seen heavy snow and ice which has affected the road network across Scotland, with more extreme weather predicted for the rest of the winter season.

It is therefore important to ensure that we are able to cope with whatever conditions come our way.

Below are a few tips on how to prepare yourself and your vehicle for winter.

Get a winter car check
If you are not confident in doing it yourself, have a competent person check your vehicle is ready for winter.

Pack a survival kit
Make up a winter emergency kit to keep in the boot – chances are you won’t need it but you’ll be glad it’s there if you do.

Reduce your speed
Slow down and stay in control. Many winter collisions happen because drivers are going too fast for road conditions.

Give extra space
It takes longer to stop on slippery roads – make sure there’s extra space between you and other vehicles.

See and be seen
Use your vehicle’s full lighting system in poor visibility and whiteout conditions. If conditions become dangerous, pull over safely and wait for the weather to improve.
